Instructor Certification Process

  1.  Online BLS Instructor Essentials:  An access code for the Online BLS Instructor Essentials course will be emailed to you upon registration.  Complete this component prior to attending the instructor course.

  2. BLS Instructor Training:  BLS Instructor training is conducted by a C4CPR faculty member at one of our locations. Participants learn about the Mission of the American Heart Association, goals for Emergency Cardiovascular Care, affiliation with a Training Center, and the programs that they will be able to instruct as an AHA instructor.  Participants will evaluate skills being performed to become familiar with the skills testing process.

  3. Skills and Content Competency: Following the instructor training, candidates will attend a BLS Skills Testing session by appointment at a C4CPR Training Center.  The instructor candidate will be tested on BLS skills competency and will complete the written exams for BLS Provider and BLS Instructor.

  4. Observation:  Instructor candidates observe BLS class(es) taught by C4CPR instructors until they feel comfortable teaching the course independently.  This step can be conducted at any C4CPR Training Center.

  5. Monitoring:  Instructor candidates teach a course independently under the supervision of  C4CPR Training Center Faculty.  Faculty will evaluate instructor candidate performance against a rubric of requirements from the American Heart Association.  Successful monitoring will result in issuance of a BLS Instructor certification from the American Heart Association.

This step may be completed at a C4CPR Training Center (included) or off-site for an additional fee.

  6. Affiliation:  BLS Instructors may join an existing training site or establish a new training site.  All instructors must be affiliated with an American Heart Association Training Center to issue certification cards for courses they instruct.
